Talent Isn’t a Zero-Sum Game

There’s Enough Talent to go around.

As an individual: when a peer gets promoted, lands a new role, or levels up — that’s not a loss for you. Careers aren’t zero-sum. Their growth doesn’t shrink your opportunity. The people who genuinely celebrate others’ wins are the ones who build relationships that actually last.

The same is true on the other side of the table. When someone on your team leaves to grow somewhere else, resist the urge to see it as a loss. Sometimes people need to leave to become who they’re going to become.

Celebrate them on the way out. Stay a good reference, a good connection, a good memory. Because the best talent often boomerangs — and if they do come back, they come back better: more skilled, more seasoned, more valuable to your org than when they left.

But here’s the part people miss: if you can’t shift this mindset, it doesn’t just cost you the relationship. It costs you your reputation.

Bitterness is loud. Everyone hears it — the person who left, their new team, the industry watching how you handled it. Insecurity dressed up as competitiveness doesn’t read as strength. It reads as smallness. And smallness is the one thing that follows you long after the “win” you thought you were protecting is forgotten.

The leaders who make room for other people’s growth build teams people want to return to. The ones who don’t build reputations people want to avoid.
