Master Your Body Language During Interviews (In-Person & Remote)

Your words make up a fraction of the message you relay to the people you are talking to (or with), so it is imperative that you leverage your non-verbal communication skills while you speak. Non-verbal cues have a huge impact on those around you.

Communicate with a positive physical presence and ensure that your body shows an approachable posture. The same applies when you’re working remotely. Your body language both in person as well as on video calls should also indicate someone willing to listen to the other party while paying attention.

Some of the things to consider about your body language include:

  • Always smile — it is comforting!

  • Do not cross your arms, as it does not demonstrate openness.

  • Always maintain an upright posture as it shows your engaged and attentive.

  • Maintain eye contact with the person you are speaking to, if you are on camera make sure you are directly in front of your camera.

  • Turn off your other devices and distracting messaging platform such as slack, Skype, or messenger (or put them on silent) when having a conversation or in an meeting.
